The Story of Achilles

Hello. My name is Achilles, and I want to tell you my story. I was the son of a brave king named Peleus and a beautiful sea nymph named Thetis. Because my mother had magical powers, she wanted to make me strong and safe. When I was just a baby, she dipped me into the magical River Styx, which made my whole body invincible, meaning nothing could harm me. But she held me by one tiny spot—my heel. That one little spot was the only part of me that wasn't protected.

Growing up, I didn't go to a normal school. My teacher was a very wise creature named Chiron, who was half-man and half-horse, called a centaur. He was kind and taught me everything a hero needed to know. We would run through the forests and mountains, and he taught me to be fast, strong, and brave. He also taught me how to be a good person and a great leader, preparing me for the adventures ahead.

When I grew up, a great war began between my people, the Greeks, and the city of Troy. It was called the Trojan War, and it lasted for ten long years. I went to fight with my soldiers and my best friend, Patroclus. Everyone said I was the greatest warrior there. One day, my friend Patroclus was hurt in battle, and I was so sad and angry. I knew I had to be brave for him, so I went back to fight the greatest Trojan warrior, a prince named Hector, to help my friends win the war.

I was the strongest warrior, but my story came to an end during a great battle at Troy. A lucky arrow, shot by the Trojan prince Paris, found the one spot that wasn't protected—my heel. Even though my life ended, people have told my story for thousands of years in a famous poem called the Iliad. Today, when people talk about a person's one small weakness, they sometimes call it their 'Achilles' heel,' all because of my story. It reminds everyone that even the strongest heroes are still human.
