A Dragon's Tale
Hello there. I am a Komodo dragon, the biggest lizard in the whole world. I live on beautiful, sunny islands in a country called Indonesia. My favorite islands are named Komodo and Rinca. They are rocky and warm, which is just how I like it. My body is covered in strong, scaly skin that acts like a suit of armor, protecting me as I walk through the bushes. Do you see my tongue? It's long and yellow, and it splits in two at the end, just like a fork. I flick it in and out, in and out. This is how I taste the air. It helps me find my next snack from far away and is my special way of exploring the world around me.
I didn't start out this big. I hatched from an egg, and when I was just a little hatchling, I had to be very careful. To stay safe from bigger animals, I spent my first few years living up in the trees. I was a great climber. Now that I am all grown up and strong, I don't need to hide in trees anymore. I am a very patient hunter. I can stand perfectly still, waiting quietly in the tall grass for my food to walk by. When a deer or a wild pig gets close, I surprise it. I have a very special bite. My mouth has venom in it, which helps me catch my food. It’s what makes me such a great hunter and the king of my island.
For a very long time, my dragon family and I lived all by ourselves on our islands. It was our secret home, and no one else knew we were here. But then, something amazing happened. In the year 1910, a group of human explorers came to our islands. When they saw me, they couldn't believe their eyes. They had discovered real-life dragons. They were so surprised and excited. A couple of years later, in 1912, a scientist named Peter Ouwens studied us and gave us our official scientific name. After that, everyone around the world heard about us, and we became famous. We weren't a secret anymore.
Being the biggest predator on my island is a very important job. I help keep nature in balance. By hunting, I make sure there aren't too many deer or other animals. This keeps our island home healthy for all the plants and animals that live here. It's a big responsibility, but I am proud to be a guardian of my home. I get to be one of nature’s most amazing wonders, and I work hard to keep my island a wonderful place to live.
